A GOVERNMENT proposal to tell
motorists where non-fixed speed cameras are deployed has been endorsed
by the incoming police commissioner.
Premier Campbell Newman told a budget estimates hearing this month
that police would be asked to regularly identify where they were putting
speed cameras - as already happens in other states.
The incoming
commissioner, Ian Stewart, said he agreed that publicising speed camera
locations could slow down lead-footed drivers and improve road safety.
"I
think it's a great idea because the primary purpose of speed cameras is
to slow traffic down to make sure people are obeying the speed limits,"
Mr Stewart said.
"We know they have an impact. We've seen it over the years with the trend lines of serious traffic accidents."
But Mr Stewart said there was value in police still being able to deploy some speed cameras undercover.
