Fatality on rail crossing reminds us that this hazard that should not be forgotten


The Transport Minister, Terry Mulder, says talks are underway to see if the Government can "ramp up" the replacement of rail level crossings, after one person died in a crash and nine others were taken to hospital on Saturday, after a Metro train collided with a truck at a level crossing.

There are 172 rail crossings in metropolitan Melbourne and 10 of them have been earmarked for an upgrade. Transport Minister Terry Mulder says discussions are underway to see if they can speed up the replacement program. But he says it is an expensive proposition, which would cost between $150 and $200 million per crossing.
"The ones that we are tackling is somewhere in the order of $367 million [that] has been allocated just for three [crossing upgrades], he told "It gives you an idea of the sort of money required to deal with that number of crossings. "We are having those discussions at the moment to see if we can ramp up the program but it is a very, very expensive business."  Read more
