Ministers approve strategy to drive uptake of telematics (inc speedalerting) to improve road safety

Policy Framework for Intelligent Transport Systems in Australia is intended to inform and guide:

  • government decision makers,
  • potential providers of ITS technology,
  • the ITS and road safety research community, and
  • the broader Australian community.
"Telematics is an ITS technology that allows monitoring of a vehicle’s movements, including (depending on the application) attributes such as speed, location, and on-board mass. Telematics is finding increasing commercial uses, leading to more efficient private commercial freight operations. It can also be used as a regulatory tool, for purposes such as road charging and compliance and enforcement. The Intelligent Access Program, administered by Transport Certification Australia, is one of a number of telematics frameworks which use vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring to deliver greater productivity while managing increased wear on the road network. Australia’s Transport Ministers recently approved a national strategy to drive the voluntary uptake of in-vehicle telematics in the road freight industry to improve road safety, reduce transport costs and cut emissions.

The National Road Safety Strategy 2011–2020 identifies the potential uses of ITS as an additional tool in improving road safety. Examples of this include  Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA / Speed Alerting),
