Road safety challenge in Hay Point QLD

HAY Point businesses and residents have been challenged to find positive solutions for the prevention of road accidents and deaths.

About $10,000 in prizes is on offer; the best idea will win a $2000 Flight Centre voucher and there are three $1000 vouchers for runners up.

Dubbed 'Home Safe Using Hay Point Road', the campaign is being driven by the Road Accident Action Group (RAAG) and BMA Hay Point Coal Terminal Stage 3 (HPX3) project.

It will run from Monday, July 9 to Wednesday, July 11.

BMA HPX3 project director John Pincock said the campaign was about generating awareness of safe driving techniques to improve driving behaviour on the Hay Point Rd network.

"Safety doesn't just start and stop on a worksite... some of the greatest risks we face on a daily basis are while we are driving," Mr Pincock said.

RAAG safety co-ordinator Graeme Ransley said he believed the campaign would create awareness of proven low-risk driving techniques and identify new strategies.

Recent studies found the main causes behind the region's fatalities were driver inattention, undue care and colliding with roadside objects, Mr Ransley said.

"On Hay Point Rd alone, 42% of incidents involve being hit by an object, 20% of crashes involve an overturned vehicle and 17% of crashes are caused by being rear-ended. It is a sobering thought to realise most of these accidents, particularly those leading to loss of life, are preventable," he said.
