A major safety upgrade to Victoria's number one country level crossing black spot at Lardners Track in Warragul has been completed, Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder said today.
The $2 million level crossing and road intersection upgrade works were completed last weekend with the commissioning of boom barriers and advance automatic warning signs at the notorious level crossing and intersection.
Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood met VicTrack project staff at Lardners Track to tour the completed works, including major improvements to the nearby Drouin-Warragul Road intersection.
"The crossing has been upgraded with the installation of boom barriers and safety fencing, significantly improving safety at the rail crossing," Mr Mulder said.
"Additionally on Drouin-Warragul Road, new traffic lights and advance automatic warning signs have been installed, delivering enhanced safety measures. The boom barriers, traffic lights and advance automatic warning are co-ordinated to maximise safety and traffic flow."
"We have kept our promise to the Warragul and Drouin communities to improve safety at the state's number one country level crossing black spot. The Coalition Government is also keeping our promise to other country communities to accelerate improved level crossing safety across the state."
Mr Blackwood welcomed the completion of the works, which he said the community would warmly welcome.
"For many years, the Warragul community called for action to fix this risky intersection and today I'm pleased to see the rail and road safety project complete," Mr Blackwood said.
"I'm pleased to see the Coalition Government delivering on its pre-election commitments and delivering for the Narracan community in spades."
Mr Blackwood said the area around the crossing and intersection included farms, industry, schools and family homes from nearby expanding Warragul.
"The upgrade works have delivered a much safer route for all motorists crossing into the busy Drouin-Warragul Road and that's what the Drouin and Warragul communities deserve."
"Whether people drive a farm tractor, a factory van, the school bus or the family car, they can be assured it's now a safer rail crossing and intersection," Mr Blackwood said.
The level crossing and road intersection upgrade works were funded under the Victorian Coalition Government's Level and Pedestrian Crossing Upgrade Program.
VicTrack managed the solution for the intersection and level crossing from the project's inception, with works commencing in mid-February 2012.
