Do speed cameras save lives?

A mobile speed camera review has found majority of the cameras are saving lives and not just revenue raising. Jason Morrison reveals they have cut fatalities by 87%, but are you convinced they are not revenue raising?
The first annual review of 97 fixed speed cameras shows that 92 of the devices haveZ improved road safety in their respective areas.
The state government released the figures following last year's report into speed cameras by the NSW Auditory-General.
Figures show that 61 fatalities occurred over the five-year period before the cameras were installed, compared to just eight in the latest five-year period since their deployment.
The improvement represents an 87 per cent drop in road deaths.
In 2011, 376 road deaths were recorded, which shows the vast majority of vehicular fatalities occur outside metropolitan areas and outside zones where fixed speed cameras are installed.
Roads Minister Duncan Gay said the drop in fatalities may still fail to convince drivers that speed cameras are about saving lives.
Over the same five year periods, vehicle crashes dropped by 38 per cent and injury-related incidents fell by 37 per cent.
