Road safety night to aid new drivers on the westside

Knowledge can save lives, say organisers of a free road safety information evening for young drivers in Moggill this Friday.

Senior Constable Leesa Richardson said the P1, P2 and Learner Licence Holders Education Night was for young drivers in the Bellbowrie, Moggill and Anstead area.

"The night is to educate the young drivers in the area on road safety, vehicle modifications and the consequences of hooning in vehicles," she said.

"A guest speaker from the Spinal Unit will attend and address the group with their story and stories of many more young drivers. An officer from the Brisbane West Traffic Branch will attend and talk about the legislative side of things and answer any questions our young drivers may have.

"I have been in the area now for three years and have seen many of the young people grow and are now driving. I just want to make sure they stay safe."

Bellbowrie's Amber Cruickshank, 20, feels strongly about safe driving practices following the death of a young friend on Moggill Rd earlier this year.

"I really encourage people to come along. A friend of mine died in a car crash on Moggill Rd this year. He was friends with a lot of people and his death came as a huge shock," she said.

"I know there have been times I've been on the roads and I wouldn't know what to do if I suddenly lost control. It's not a good way to die, it's not how people should die. They should die from being old and not from crashing."

Attendees can enjoy free pizza and ice cream and can present their P-Plate or learner licence with the 4070 postcode to go into the draw for prizes including a Navman and seat covers.

The education night will be held at Moggill State School Hall, 3417 Moggill Rd, from 7pm-9pm. Phone 3202 735.
